Texas Service Center

Short answer

The Texas Service Center, once the Southern Service Center, is the USCIS office behind receipt numbers that begin with SRC. USCIS's forms chart lists it for the I-140 (shared with Nebraska), L-1 petitions (shared with California) and the I-730, and since Nov 13, 2023 it also receives mailed responses for Potomac cases. USCIS publishes no medians by center: nationally, I-140s took a median of 3.9 months and I-129s 9.5 months in April to June 2026.

What the Texas Service Center handles

Texas belongs to USCIS’s Service Center Operations Directorate, the part of the agency that works on cases decided without an interview; there are five such centers (USCIS, SCOPS). You cannot visit it: per the USCIS glossary, service centers have no public counter and decide what arrives by mail, online or through the Lockbox.

Which forms reach Texas comes from USCIS’s Service Center Forms Processing chart, last updated Oct 11, 2024. USCIS warns that the assignments shift with workload. The rows that include Texas:

Texas as the mail address for Potomac cases

USCIS said the Potomac Service Center began moving to a new facility in Camp Springs, Maryland, on Aug 21, 2023, and stopped accepting mailed correspondence on Nov 13, 2023. Since then, mail for cases processed by Potomac, such as responses to a Request for Evidence or a Notice of Intent to Deny, goes to the Texas Service Center, unless the notice says otherwise. Online cases (IOE receipts) upload responses in the USCIS online account instead (USCIS alert).

Mailing a response to Texas does not mean your case moved there. See our Potomac page and what to expect after a Request for Evidence.

Texas and the I-730

USCIS’s HART FAQ, accurate as of Aug 1, 2024, says all I-730s are filed at the Texas Service Center, as USCIS announced in January 2023. For refugee follow-to-join petitions, Texas receives the I-730 and, since May 6, 2024, USCIS International Operations does the first domestic processing (HART FAQ, PDF). The 2024 forms chart still lists the I-730 at both Texas and Nebraska.

How to know if your case is at Texas

Start with the first three letters of the receipt number on any USCIS notice; the full number is three letters followed by ten digits (USCIS, checking your case status online). The letters name the office that first took in the case. SRC stands for Texas, a code left over from its earlier names, the Southern Regional Center and the Southern Service Center, according to USCIS’s Congressional Inquiries guide (USCIS guide, PDF).

Transfers change where a case sits, not its number. USCIS sends a transfer notice and keeps the receipt number (Workload Transfer Updates, archived). Texas shows up often in the 2020 moves on that page:

  • Into Texas: fiscal year 2021 H-1B cap petitions from Vermont and California; immediate-relative I-130s from Nebraska; F2A I-130s from California.
  • Out of Texas: I-751s, some to the National Benefits Center and some to field offices.

Processing times: what you can and cannot get

No USCIS dataset gives a Texas-only time: the quarterly report has one national median per form. The current range by form and office is on the USCIS processing times page; it runs behind a security check, so we send you there instead of copying it. National figures for the forms Texas works on:

Source: USCIS, All Forms by Quarter, FY2026 Q3. USCIS left the I-730 median blank for the quarter, so we show none. The I-817 figure rests on 43 decisions, a very small sample. Every median covers all offices that handle the form.

For employment cases, our H-1B page, PERM processing time and PERM case status cover the steps around the I-140.

If your Texas case is slow

  1. Find your case inquiry date. On the processing times page, choose your form and the Texas Service Center, and type the date on your receipt notice.
  2. Ask USCIS in writing through e-Request once that date has passed.
  3. Phone the USCIS Contact Center: 800-375-5283, TTY 800-767-1833. Live agents take calls on weekdays, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern. USCIS’s Contact Us page says a service request should get an answer within 30 days, or 15 for an expedite.
  4. Request an expedite if a USCIS criterion fits, such as severe financial loss, an emergency, an urgent humanitarian reason or a clear USCIS error. The decision is discretionary (expedite requests).
  5. Contact Congress. A House member or one of your senators can make an inquiry once you sign a privacy release (USCIS Policy Manual).
  6. Go to the CIS Ombudsman, an independent office inside DHS. For a delay, it asks that you sent USCIS a case inquiry in the last 90 days, gave it at least 60 days to respond, and are past your case inquiry date (CIS Ombudsman).

The YourCaseStatus app (coming soon) will alert you when your status changes. What each message in case status online means is on our status index.

Mailing addresses

Addresses vary by form, by category and sometimes by your state, so we point to USCIS instead of copying them:

The other centers

  • Nebraska (LIN) shares the I-140 and I-730.
  • California (WAC) shares L-1 petitions.
  • Potomac (YSC) sends its mail through Texas.
  • Vermont (EAC) handles T and U visa cases, which Texas does not.
  • The National Benefits Center handles NBC and MSC receipts; USCIS does not count it among the five service centers.

All forms are on our processing times hub.

Frequently asked questions

What does SRC mean on my USCIS receipt?

SRC is the prefix for the Texas Service Center. USCIS's Congressional Inquiries guide says it comes from the center's old names, the Southern Regional Center and the Southern Service Center.

Why does my Potomac notice tell me to mail Texas?

USCIS said Potomac stopped accepting mailed correspondence on Nov 13, 2023. Mail for Potomac cases goes to the Texas Service Center unless your notice says otherwise. Receipts that start with IOE upload responses online.

Does the Texas Service Center handle I-140s?

Yes. USCIS's chart (last updated Oct 11, 2024) lists the I-140 at Texas and Nebraska only. Nationally, I-140s took a median of 3.9 months in April to June 2026.

How long does an I-730 take at Texas?

USCIS did not report a national I-730 median for April to June 2026. It had 23,562 pending and finished 240 that quarter. Check the USCIS processing times page for the current range.

My case was transferred to Texas. Where do I file premium processing?

USCIS's archived transfer page says to file the I-907 with the center that now has the case, with a copy of your I-797 notice. Your receipt number does not change.
